Skeleton documentation

Backcountry Amateur Radio is based on the concept of using ham radio communications in the backcountry and wilderness. For communication purposes, there is no better avenue for us. Satellite based communications have their merits, especially where there might be a serious emergency. However, radio can offer a solution there as well. Relying on systems in the sky is not always a recommended first course of action. How often are you simply thinking that it would be great to send a nice message home that all is well and everyone ok? Or talk to someone who can do that for you? The amateur radio community has pioneered ways to do this long before satellite communication.

Fortunately for us, the means to do so are being delivered in much smaller and lighter weight packages.

As a practical means, the use of FRS and GMRS radio has long dominated the spectrum backcountry skiers, climbers, hikers, and backpackers. There are many other outdoor pursuits where radio is useful. One favorite here is the backcountry rendezvous. Which is how this whole thing came about.
